Description
Destined to be an attraction and conversation piece in any garden where its grown, the Winged Blood Thorn Rose captivates in more ways than one. Though it produces loads of fragrant, lovely white single flowers in spring, what this unique rose is most adored for are its thorns. Yes, its magnificent and most unusual large and showy sanguine blood-red colored winged thorns, which truly glow when backlit by the sun. Truly sight to behold, you have to see it to believe it! Ferny foliage with more than eleven leaflets and pretty red hips that follow the flowers are an extra bonus. At 6 to 8 feet tall and nearly as wide, the Blood Thorn Rose makes an incredible and provocative specimen in the garden with its architectural arching branches. Disease free as can be!
Landscape & Garden Uses
We think the Blood Thorn Rose is best used in design as a special specimen, preferably where it will be backlit by the sun so as to bring that amazing glow to the thorns. That said in can be useful as a barrier hedge as well. A fine addition to rose gardens, cottage gardens, butterfly gardens and oddity gardens.
Growing Preferences
The Blood Thorn Rose is exceptionally easy to grow in most any moist but well-drained soil of average fertility, including well-drained clay, and full sun to part shade. As with all other roses, morning sun is a must to dry dew from the leaves but some afternoon shade or filtered sun is okay. Flowering will be best if the plant receives at least 6 hours of direct sun during the day. Has very good drought tolerance and high disease resistance. No pruning is necessary however an annual hard pruning in late winter, prior to new growth emerging, can ensure new stems that will show off more of the glorious red winged thorns. If you do prune this plant make sure you follow up with a bit of organic fertilizer.
